Downtown Victoria Urgent Primary Care Centre

The facility plan for the Urgent Primary Care Centre at the Wade Building enhances access to primary care and reduces emergency visits through integrated, patient-centred services.

Island Health and the Victoria Division of Family Practice (VDFP) identified an urgent need to stabilize and enhance existing primary care services in downtown Victoria. The development of the Wade Building presented an opportunity to address this critical need while fulfilling the Ministry of Health’s mandate for an Urgent Primary Care Centre (UPCC).

The UPCC’s spatial requirements were carefully planned to support patient-centred care and efficient operations. Key features include:

  • A welcoming reception and waiting area.
  • Organized clinical zones with exam rooms arranged in pods for team-based care.
  • A back-of-house area with virtual care stations and a group meeting room for staff collaboration.
  • Negative pressure rooms for infection control.
  • Procedure rooms equipped for urgent care.

A Vision for Integrated, Accessible Care

The centre’s vision is to provide patient-centred primary care with an emphasis on longitudinal care delivered by an integrated team of health professionals. The UPCC aims to reduce the number of unattached patients in the Victoria area and improve access to essential healthcare services.

In addition to primary care, the UPCC serves an urgent care centre, offering walk-in services for patients requiring same-day or next-day appointments. These services are available 365 days a year, including evenings, weekends and holidays. The urgent care component is designed to reduce unnecessary visits to Emergency Departments, alleviating pressure on hospital resources.

Supporting the Next Generation of Health Professionals

The new UPCC also serves as a clinical training site for family practice residents, medical students, nursing students, and other allied health professionals. By providing hands-on teaching in a fully integrated healthcare team environment, the centre helps ensure the future availability of skilled healthcare providers.
