PNE Amphitheatre Renewal

The facility plan for the PNE Amphitheatre Renewal envisions a world-class, year-round outdoor venue in Hastings Park, a cultural hub for artists and events.

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) and the City of Vancouver engaged Inform Planning to assess space needs, engage stakeholders, and develop a high-level functional program for the proposed amphitheatre and the surrounding ‘Heart of the Park.’ The facility aims to provide a world-class outdoor venue that is accessible to a wide variety of artists and events, enhancing its role as a vibrant and cultural hub.

A Vision for Year-Round Community Connection

The 2011 Hastings Park Master Plan set forth a vision to create a year-round gathering place for diverse visitors. Building on this, engagement conducted in 2018 for the Business Case highlighted the benefits of increased capacity and weather protection. Inform Planning facilitated extensive stakeholder engagement through interviews and focus groups, ensuring the design reflects users’ needs and aligns with the community’s vision. These enhancements would allow the amphitheatre to host a broader range of shows throughout the year.

Innovative concepts include:

  • Flexible “Heart of the Park” areas featuring multi-use festival plazas.
  • Temporary event structures for adaptable programming.
  • A covered amphitheatre with modular seating for diverse configurations.

Exploring Future Possibilities

Four future design scenarios were considered in the Business Case, each incorporating a roof and permanent event infrastructure. The preferred option features substantial roof coverage and surrounding buildings to create a versatile, weather-protected venue.

A Venue for the Future

The design includes universal washrooms, green spaces, and “plug-and-play” utilities to support diverse performances and community events. This plan enhances event workflows, promotes accessibility, and positions the venue as a key cultural and economic hub for East Vancouver and the broader Lower Mainland.
